5 Steps of Getting Invisalign Aligners
Schedule an appointment at PacificWest
The beginning of your Invisalign treatment commences with a visit to our orthodontist (Dr. Wang or Dr. Lee) at our Surrey office. We can also arrange a virtual visit if necessary. During your initial consultation, we discuss your goals for your teeth or bite, evaluate your teeth, and advise what the recommended course of treatment should be. We provide you with several different options and discuss their advantages and disadvantages to allow you to make an informed decision. We provide you with realistic cost estimates for all recommended treatment options and answer all your questions to help set your mind at ease.
Completion of x-rays and scans
Once you have decided on the course of action, we then need to take digital photos of your teeth, face, and skull. We also do a 3D scan of your teeth. All of this information is important to ensure we have a thorough understanding of your dental condition and can forward the correct information to Invisalign for the creation of your custom-fit aligners. Invisalign uses a proprietary software program known as Clincheck to transfer your digital images and 3D scan into the plastic aligners for use during your treatment. Your doctors have full control of the design process and communicate with the team at Invisalign to plan the proper sequence of aligners to move your teeth from their current location into the desired position. When your doctor is satisfied with the plan, he will then give approval for the aligners to be manufactured.
Fitting your aligners
When your aligners arrive at PacificWest, you will need to have your first fitting done. The Invisalign aligners are made from PBA free plastic, ensuring you have the correct amount of force required to move your teeth without discomfort or any unwanted effects. It is recommended that you wear your aligners from 20-22 hours each day. For best results, remove your aligners only to eat and drink or to brush and floss your teeth. Your doctor will teach you the proper way to insert and remove your aligners as well as how to clean them properly. You can track your teeth straightening process on the MyInvisalign app on your smart phone or tablet.
Followups and checkups
Your orthodontist will provide you with detailed instructions on the frequency with which you should change your aligners. Most commonly, you will change them once every 7-14 days. You will notice that each set of aligners feels slightly different from the last. This is normal. As the teeth move, you need to move on to the next set of aligners to allow the teeth to continue to shift into the desired trajectory. The success and time frame of your treatment will depend on your level of commitment to the process. For best results, follow your orthodontist’s advice and be sure to attend all checkups.
Enjoy your new smile
Once your teeth have shifted into the desired position, you can schedule an appointment to have any attachments removed and your teeth polished. Digital photos are again taken at this time as a record of the improvements made through the treatment. At this time, an additional set of aligners will be made to keep your teeth in the desired position. Once your ideal smile has been achieved, the bones surrounding your teeth still need time to take root and heal. This can take from 3-6 months to successfully achieve. Initially, you should wear your retainer every night for the first year. Thereafter, 1-2 nights per week is sufficient.
